Geography
Mauritius, officially, The Republic of Mauritius, is located in the south-east of Africa at approximately 900 kilometers east of Madagascar, 250 kms from Reunion island and further south of the Seychelles. The central plateau is around 600m high, and counts several extinct volcanic craters where rivers and waterfalls meet.
Surrounding this plateau are 3 main mountain chains characterized by basalt rocks fantastically sculpted, reminiscence of the volcanic origins of the island. From this chains, 3 peaks stand out : the Piton de la Rivière Noire (828m), the Pieter Both (823m) and the Pouce (812m). Located in North West, Port-Louis is the capital and largest city of the island. The other main towns are Curepipe (in the centre), Vacoas-Phoenix, Quatre Bornes, Rose-Hill and Beau-Bassin. Mahebourg (south east) is not a big town, but is the nearest to the international airport of Plaisance-Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.
